Paulownia tomentosa

A native of China, the Paulownia has been esteemed for millenia in the Orient for its vigor, beauty, and usefulness. Known as Kiri in Japan, its wood is the traditional material for building Koto (Japanese harp) and Tansu wedding chests. Japanese woodworkers value Kiri wood highly for its exceptional lightness, stability, and workability.

The Paulownia is believed to have established itself by accident in North America in the mid-1800's. Its seedpods were frequently used as a packing material for ceramics shipped from the Orient, and some viable seed apparently managed to start volunteer Paulownia stands along the banks of the Potomac River. Since then it has naturalized itself throughout the Eastern Central states and is now planted as a fast growing ornamental shade tree in the Pacific Coast region.

We planted our first Paulownia seedling thirty years ago to provide shade in our horse pasture. It was the fastest growing tree we've ever witnessed, reaching 40 feet after a few years in poor soil. We were also impressed by the beauty of its large catalpa-like leaves ("elephant ears") and showy purple blossoms which provide excellent bee fodder in the Spring.

Because of numerous requests from customers, we offer a limited number of Paulownia trees each year for local sale…… In the future, we may have some available for mail-order. Please enquire -

The Black Locust Tree (Robinia pseudoacacia) is one of our favorite trees for homestead plantings. Black Locusts provide beauty, shade, fodder, soil improvement (they're legumes), and durable, rot-resistant hardwood. For a more detailed discussion on the history and use of this remarkable tree, please refer to the Greenmantle Catalog. Availability and price of Black Locust seedlings will be posted in this space during our next shipping season….
